Watch an early demo of the Pixel 6a unboxing; The phone was found in sales weeks before the release

Google has been known to release information about the upcoming Pixel model long before its launch in an effort to stem third-party leaks. I did this with the Pixel 4 and last month during I/O I showed up pictures of the upcoming Pixel 7 series. Towards the end of the month, the Pixel 7 prototype was out on eBay and a few days later, A prototype of the Pixel 7 Pro has been sold to a Reddit subscriber on the Facebook Marketplace.

Along with the Pixel 7 series prototypes, Pixel 6a units went on sale before it was officially released

The guy who bought the Pixel 7 Pro had no idea that the device he bought hasn’t been officially announced by Google yet. In fact, he thought he bought the Pixel 6 Pro even though smartphone enthusiasts can easily distinguish between the rear camera straps on both models. The guy who bought the Pixel 7 Pro prototype was able to use it for three weeks before that Google caught and wiped the device.

As they say in those late-night TV ads, “Wait! There’s more.” according to Tweets from German writer Nils Arensmeyer (via 9to5Google), there is a listing on Facebook Marketplace posted by someone from Malaysia trying to sell the Pixel 6a. Yes, the Pixel 6a phone went official on May 11th. However, pre-orders will not start until July 21 and the Medium Ranger will not be released until the following week (July 28).
The person showing the Pixel 6a up front (in Malaysian currency around $500) previously posted unlocking the device’s box on a TikTok video. Unlike the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro units sold, the Pixel 6a phones do not appear to be prototypes and have been sold out quite early. This does not mean that it is acceptable for you to buy one and use it.

Google will certainly seek to lock down phones just as it did with the sold-out Pixel 7 Pro prototype. The manufacturer would be within its rights to do so. The Pixel 6a will be equipped with a 6.1-inch OLED display with a resolution of 1080 x 2400. This works with an aspect ratio of 20:9 and the screen will refresh at 60Hz which was the standard refresh rate for smartphones a few years ago.

Under the hood we should find the same 5nm Google Tensor chipset designed by Samsung that is used to power the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. The mid-range ranger will feature 6GB of energy-efficient LPDDR5 memory along with 128GB of storage (UFS 3.1).

The Pixel 6a will receive three Android updates and five years of Android security updates

On the back, the Pixel 6a will have a primary camera with a 12.2MP sensor, and a second camera (this one is ultra-wide) powered by a 12.2MP sensor. The front punch-hole camera has a weight of 8 MP sensor. As usual, the star of the show will be Google’s photo production capabilities. A 4410 mAh battery will be charged at 18W. The phone will come out of the box with Android 12 pre-installed.

The phone will be updated three times by Google to Android 13, Android 14 and Android 15. It will also get five years of Android security updates.

Pixel 6a color options include Sage, Chalk, and Charcoal. Since there aren’t multiple configuration options to choose from (6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage being the only option available), buying the phone might seem easier, especially with only one price to remember. For example, in the US, the Pixel 6a will cost $449.
