Porsche Unveils America’s 2023 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet – Robb Report

Porsche has been in the United States for 70 years. To celebrate this milestone, the German automaker has unveiled a limited edition 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet. The patriotic variant is based on the brand’s first car built specifically for the United States – the aptly named 356 America Roadster.

The company’s cars began to appear here in 1950, thanks to New York-based importer Max Hoffmann. Although Porsches had proven successful with his customers, Hoffman urged the brand to bring in a lighter, less expensive model that he was sure would sell better. That would be the 356 America, which arrived here in 1953. Only 16 examples of the stripped convertible were made, but it would serve as the catalyst for one of Porsche’s most famous cars, the 356 Speedster. It would also, decades later, serve as inspiration for the 964th generation of the 911 America Roadster, which was released in 1992 and 1993.

All three American models share common elements: They only come in a cabriolet variant, and have manual gearboxes and rear-wheel drive. The latest version, designed by Porsche Exclusive Manufaktur, is finished in Azure Blue 356 and has an all-black windshield frame, two touches that refer to the original.

There are some new details as well. These include the red and white “America” stripes on the sides, as well as the white “911 Carrera” and red “GTS” badges on the back. But most noticeable are the three-spoke RS Spyder wheels, each with a silver faceplate, white spokes, and red exterior stripes.

The cabin is more streamlined. Everything, from the steering wheel to the transmission to the seats, is covered in black leather. The only color flashes are red and white contrasting stitching on the dashboard, center console, and seats, as well as the red seat belts for the rear seat. The door sills also have an illuminated plaque commemorating the 70th anniversary of the 356 America. If you prefer more color, there is an “Extended Inner Pack” that adds more red.

The rest of the 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet was left alone. This includes a 3.0-liter twin-turbo flat-six engine that can pump out 473 horsepower and 420 ft-lbs of torque. This makes it significantly more powerful than the 356 America, which had a fixed four-cylinder engine that produced just 70 horsepower. Performance upgrades such as rear axle steering and carbon-ceramic brakes are available.

The 2023 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet America will be available later this year. Offer will be limited to only 115 North American models, 100 of which are for Americans and 15 for Canadians. Pricing for the National Convertible will start at $186,370, which is about $35520 more than the standard convertible.
